This is the Deering Sierra banjo-
The flagship of Deering – The Great American Banjo Company!
A long time favorite, it represents Greg Deering’s continuing goal to build a true professional, yet affordable banjo made in the USA. As the decades of the Sierra’s manufacture grow, Greg updates the Sierra to keep up with manufacturing advancements to improve the Sierra- so long as they don’t increase the cost of the banjo. Of greatest importance will never change; the pot assembly must be true professional grade, and high grade wood for the neck because the TONE is paramount.
And now, as Deering’s inlaying process has moved to precision computer controlled inlay cutting and insetting, Greg knew that the time had come when the Sierra could receive an exciting cosmetic upgrade without price increase. The original Sierra had only dot inlays. Now it is fully appointed with Greg’s incredible artwork.
Its clear, well rounded tone is the result of Deering’s pot assembly with the ’06 tone ring, rim and flange- The same one you’ll find on most of their models all the way to the top of the professional line. Deering’s newest slim neck profile make it a banjo you can play at any skill level. A definite upgrade for any advancing banjo student or jam and festival hopper who might own a decent import that looks good and plays well- Remember This banjo is a professional upgrade, fully capable of taking you to professional level performance, a banjo one could earn a living with. In fact, there are pros who do play the Sierra for a living. When the amazing picker and banjo expert Jens Kruger (while still living and teaching banjo in Switzerland) first played one, he was very impressed. Amazingly today he is an important part of the Deering company. He says: “it’s good for everything, all the way up to the professional level. The tone ring is an ’06 tone ring, it’s a little over three pounds, it’s a soft maple rim that vibrates extremely well, and a one piece flange that holds it all together”. Additionally, the Sierra banjo has a well engineered tailpiece to help keep the tone “in the pot” and not lost through the tailpiece into the rim that can create unwanted low overtones. Playing the Sierra up the neck, all the way down to the open positions reveals its wonderfully rounded warm tone that is brought out well in the mahogany model, and exhibits a little more power and longer sustain in maple. The neck wood species is the key to these subtle differences. The fine satin finish adds speed to your left hand on the neck. All in all, the Sierra is likely a serious upgrade from an intermediate or upper intermediate banjo, but compared to many pro banjos it delivers at a very low cost. We know making the move can be a big decision, banjos in general are expensive instruments. And you always want to purchase from a reputable dealer who knows banjos. Personally I’ve been asked if a beginner would find a high level banjo hard to play; (I know a race car may be difficult for an amateur to drive). But this is not so with a banjo. Your playing can only be improved by a better instrument, as a refined banjo can actually be easier to play. Whatever level playing you do- from your sofa to the Grand Ole stage, the all American Deering Sierra is ready for the show, a joy to play and pleasing to hear.
